1. What is a warming center?

A warming center is an overnight shelter that provides a warm, safe space for individuals during extreme cold weather. These centers are activated during weather emergencies to help protect vulnerable community members from the dangers of freezing temperatures.

2. When do warming centers open?

Arches Warming centers are activated when the temperature drops below 32°F at 2:00 am or earlier. Volunteers are notified in advance whenever an activation occurs.

3. What do volunteers do at a warming center?

Volunteers play a vital role in keeping centers welcoming and safe. Responsibilities may include:

  • Greeting guests
  • Setting up sleeping areas (mats, blankets, supplies)
  • Distributing snacks or hot drinks
  • Light cleaning or organizing
  • Monitoring the space and assisting staff
  • Providing a calm, compassionate presence

4. What are the available shift times?

Shifts are structured to fit different schedules throughout the night:

  • 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • 9:30 PM – 1:30 AM
  • 1:00 AM – 5:00 AM
  • 4:30 AM – 8:30 AM

You can volunteer for one shift or multiple — every shift helps us stay open and serve those in need.

5. Is training provided?

Yes. All volunteers complete a short training session covering:

  • Warming center procedures
  • Volunteer expectations
  • Safety and emergency protocols
  • Guest interaction and support tips

Training is offered in-person or online.

6. Do I need special experience or qualifications?

No prior experience is required. You just need to be reliable, compassionate, and be 18 or older. Background checks are required.

7. Can I volunteer with a friend or group?

Yes! We encourage friends, coworkers, families, and community groups to volunteer together. It’s a great way to give back and support each other during your shift.

8. Where are the warming centers located?

Warming centers are hosted in various locations depending on need, including:

  • Community centers
  • Churches or shelters
  • Public buildings

We’ll place you at a location based on availability and your preferences.

9. What should I bring or wear?

  • Warm, comfortable layered clothing
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • A refillable water bottle
  • Optional: snacks, a book, or a quiet activity for downtime
